Work on a project that began at the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture in 2003 has finally concluded. The Mississippi Encyclopedia includes more than 1,600 entries and 1,451 pages and goes on sale in May.

Bessie Johnson in Clay County is having her basketwork featured on the TV show Handcrafted America. Johnson makes baskets, intricate woven works of art fashioned out of materials that come courtesy of nature -- longleaf pine needles, walnuts, corn husks, gourds, chinaberries.

A New Orleans version of Bravo's Southern Charm is on the drawing board, Bravo announced recently. "Southern Charm New Orleans" is one of six new unscripted series Bravo is planning. A premiere date has yet to be determined.

To pass the time on her morning commute with her sons, Gina Allen made up rhymes and songs that they could all sing together. Allen, a communications and information security policy specialist at Tulane University, said one rhyme in particular stuck in her head: “There’s an alligator in Audubon Park. He must have slipped out of the zoo after dark.” The rhyme lingered in Allen’s mind, serving as the creative catalyst for her new book, There’s an Alligator in Audubon Park! Allen is signing her book during the African American Book Expo in Duncanville, Texas, on May 6.
