Free genealogical affair to be held at HCC

The Family Research Association of Mississippi will be holding a genealogical fair Nov. 10 at the Rankin campus of Hinds Community College. The event will be at the George Wynne Conference Center from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Discussion groups and experts will be part of the lineup.

Tables are available for a $15 fee for anyone who wants to set up a display. Refreshments will be provided and there will be a brief business meeting for FRA members at noon.

Admission is free. You may register at the door on Nov. 10 but pre-registration is recommended. For more information or to pre-register, e-mail [email protected].

The association has a mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding their activities and genealogical resources available in Mississippi. Find a Grave

Findagrave.com lets you search grave sites by state, by name, by date, by claim to fame, etc. Find the graves of ancestors, create virtual memorials or add 'virtual flowers' and a note to a loved one's grave. (via Book of Joe)

He Being Dead Still Speaks booklet

Genealogy enthusiast the Rev. Glen Shows has published a booklet, He Being Dead Still Speaks...Researching Your Legacy.

The booklet, while small, offers an interesting assortment of aids and advice for beginning research. He includes a form for requesting Mississippi death certificates and an ancestor chart, both of which can be copies and used repeatedly.

He offers advice for researching the family tree of an adopted child with pertinent addresses for researchers who specialize in this area and groups in Mississippi who are active in finding birth parents.

Shows also includes a section on researching a "burned" county (one whose courthouse records have been destroyed by fire). Included is a map of Mississippi showing the burn dates of each county.

The last information section provides addresses, phone numbers and contact information for church records of the major religious groups in Mississippi.

Researchin' Mississippi

Researchin' Mississippi, a workshop sponsored by the Rankin County Historical Society and The Friends of the Brandon Library, is set for April 16.

The seminar will be held at the Brandon Public Library, 1475 W. Government St. in Brandon. Sessions will run from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. and will be conducted by members of the MSGenWeb Project. A luncheon for participants is included in the schedule.

Nashville gathering's a rare chance

The Music City is inviting genealogists from all over the world to strike up and band and learn more about family history June 1-4.

Nashville, Tenn., will be the site of the 2005 National Genealogical Society Conference, appropriately called "Tennessee Crossroads."

Millsaps offering enrichment class on genealogy

Link - Millsaps' Community Enrichment Series this spring again will feature a popular genealogy class, "Researching Your Family History ... The Basics and Beyond."

Classes will begin on April 4 and will continue for the next three Monday nights from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The final class will meet at the Winter Archives and History Building on a Saturday morning. Tuition is $75.
