Today is John Hancock's birthday. He was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence - and he did it with a flourish that no one could miss. Signing was an act of treason against England, and he remarked, "I'll sign it in letters bold enough so the King of England can see it without his spectacle on!" (That's why he signed so big.)
