The Shift Bicycle is definitely one of the Top 3 entries that we crackpot researchers get the most questions about. Joe wrote about the bike after it won a design contest in Taiwan. First Popular Science said it would be ready by the summer. When it wasn't and we kept getting questions, I finally e-mailed the professor who oversaw the project.
Here is my standard response to the many, many questions we get about this waycool bike:
I am the bookofjoe staff member who has been assigned to your Shift bicycle question.
We have corresponded recently with the professor in charge of the bike's design and he said they are hoping to have the product to market by Christmas of this year. (Originally, the launch date was set for summertime but that didn't happen.)
The designers, Scott Shim, Matt Grossman and Ryan Lightbody, have extensive illustrations on the Purdue Web site here. If you want to know more, all three of the designers' e-mail addresses are at the end of the page referenced above, so you can send them an e-mail and inquire. (We e-mailed Professor Shim at ssshim-at-purdue.edu.)
