Invented in 1933 by Jay Sindler, the swizzle stick is a nod to the era of the cocktail. An earlier version dates back to the 1890s when champagne-sipping society ladies used little glass rods to get rid of bubbles in their glass, believing that fizziness contributed to drunkenness.
Sindler's version became the nightclub stirrer of choice because it was cheap and could be easily personalized with a logo. After World War II, swizzle sticks were served everywhere - and became very popular as a vacation souvenir.
And this summer, why not offer guests your very own personalized swizzle sticks? (Or get some for Dad on Father's Day.) You can order your own design from Spirit Brands, the company founded by Jay Sindler in 1934. The company only does large orders but will be glad to guide you to a local distributor who can handle smaller amounts. For more information, visit www.spiritbrands.us.
