After I fidgeted with my iPod Shuffle for 10 minutes during my very first 5K, I decided to try running without music. That didn't last long. I enjoy walking without music, but when I'm running, the music definitely helps the miles go by.
Aerobics instructors have always relied on beats-per-minute to make sure our heart rate got where it needed to be, but now there is a whole host of sites online that have figured this out for you...and provide the music for free too.
- ExerciseRadio.com - a streaming site with four different music channels (strength training, cardio workouts, kickboxing and boxing and yoga) established by New York City-based trainer Terri Walsh
- PodRunner - This podcast offers free music mixes - all with a high but fixed BPM count in hour-long segments
- FitPod - free BPM-based mixes available for all different kinds of workouts (including yoga, Kristen!)
